Firearm Safety Instruction
Under Tennessee law, all public school districts are required to provide annual age-appropriate firearm safety instruction for students.
-
Pursuant to Tennessee Code Annotated ยง 49-6-1016, public schools in Tennessee must provide firearm safety instruction using materials approved by the Tennessee Department of Education.
The law requires instruction to include topics such as:
Safe storage of firearms
How to avoid injury if a firearm is found
The importance of never touching a found firearm
Immediately notifying a trusted adult if a firearm is discovered
School safety awareness related to firearms
For younger students, the instruction focuses on simple safety messaging such as:
"Stop. Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult."
-
This instruction is a mandatory requirement under Tennessee state law for all public school districts, including Sequatchie County Schools.
To ensure families are fully informed:
Instruction will be delivered in an age-appropriate manner
The district is required to use state-approved instructional materials
The district maintains a neutral viewpoint while implementing the law
No live firearms, ammunition, or demonstrations involving live fire will be used during instruction
Our focus remains on student safety, age-appropriateness, and providing information in a calm, thoughtful, and reassuring manner.
